Stephen Ames To Take Time Away From Golf

After missing the cut at this past week's British Open Championship, Calgary's Stephen Ames alluded in an interview that it was time for him to make some major changes in his golf team as well as maybe just stepping away from the game for a while.

The only Canadian to tee it up at Royal Lytham & St. Annes after managing to win a qualifying event and gain entry into the 141st playing of golf's oldest national championship, Ames carded rounds of 74 and 73 to finish at seven-over par. 

In familiar candid fashion, Ames wasn't overly thrilled with the shape of the course at Royal Lytham, saying, "Conditions were horrific, bunker-wise. Some had sand, some were mud. Some were under water. It was very inconsistent."

Ames Lone 'Canadian' To Qualify For U.S. Open

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Canada's Stephen Ames will be in the field at the U.S. Open for the first time in three years.

The 48-year-old from Calgary, who has missed six of his last eight cuts on the PGA Tour, went 65-69 in the final 36-hole qualifier that was delayed one day by rain.
 
Tommy Biershenk earned his first trip to the tournament as medallist of the qualifier.
 
Ames, meanwhile, will be the lone Canuck in the field. He tied for ninth in the 2004 tournament at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Calgary's Stephen Ames Qualifies For British Open

PLANO, Texas (AP) PGA Tour rookie Harris English shot a course best and International Finals America qualifying record 60 and easily qualified for the British Open on Monday.

English shot a 63 in the afternoon at the par 70 Queens Course at Gleneagles Country Club, just outside of Dallas, for a 123 total, to snag one of the eight available spots for the Open from July 19-22 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in England.
 
Also qualifying for the Open was England's Greg Owen, who shot 66-61-127 and Canadian Stephen Ames who shot a morning 69, but rebounded with an afternoon 61 for a 130 total.
 
"I was ready to walk off when I looked at the numbers and I went, 'You know what? If after nine holes we don't have it four or five under, we're going home,' " Ames said.
 
"After nine holes, we were five under."

CJGA Team Canada Wins 7th Annual Stephen Ames Cup

Calgary, Alta. (August 19, 2011) – Day three of the 2011 Stephen Ames Cup concluded today at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary.

Both CJGA Team Canada and Trinidad & Tobago entered the final day of competition with a shot at taking home the title, but the Canadians proved too much for their Caribbean counterparts.

CJGA Team Canada won five of the eight singles matches to beat Trinidad 10 ½ to 5 ½ and retain the title.
