B.C. Golf Community Mourns The Passing Of Ward Stouffer

Ward Stouffer, who spent more than 20 years as head professional and director of golf at Fairwinds Golf Club in Nanoose Bay, died Thursday January 5th. He was 56.
Friends and playing competitors remember Stouffer, who stood about 6-feet, 8 inches, as a gentle giant with a heart of gold who hit the ball a mile.

AKRON, Ohio (Doug Ferguson/AP) — For the longest time, golf’s biggest headache in preparing for a return to the Olympics was getting a new course built in Rio de Janeiro.

That seems like a nuisance compared with its next major hurdle.

Who’s going to play?

Ten eligible players over the last two months have pulled out of the Olympics, six of the specifically citing concerns about the Zika virus. The last week alone was particularly devastating to a sport wanting to make a good impression after being gone from the games for 112 years.

Jessica Ip, Kelsey Murphy, and Maddie SzerykBRAMPTON, Ontario (Taylor Craig/Golf Canada) — Local and international amateur golfers gathered at the Brampton Golf Club to compete for three available exemptions into the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa., from August 1-7. Kelsey Murphy of Plymouth, Mich., claimed medallist honours with a 4-under 67 showing.

The 21-year-old sunk five birdies and was bogey-free until her final hole to secure a four-stroke victory.
