Six Exemptions Earned In Alberta To The Nike Golf Junior Championship

Lethbridge, Alta. (May 3, 2016) - The Canadian Junior Golf Association kicked off its Alberta schedule this past weekend with the Nike Golf Junior Series at Henderson Lake in Lethbridge, Alta. Junior Golfers competed against one another for division titles in hopes of earning an invitation to the Nike Golf Junior Championship.

Ethan Choi and Annabelle AckroydCALGARY, Alberta — Two new champions were crowned at the 2015 Alberta Bantam and Novice Championship. Ethan Choi from Pincher Creek Golf Course finishes +4, 146, to win the Bantam Boy’s Championship. Annabelle Ackroyd, the Bantam Girl’s Champion, led the girls by 29 strokes for her win.

Ethan Choi, who recently placed fourth in the 2015 Alberta Juvenile Championship, played well to move in today’s round to claim the title. “It feels good to win,” Choi explained in an interview.

The 13 year old navigated the 5,907 yard championship course with ease, recording seven birdies during the tournament. Choi also played one of the lowest rounds of the tournament with 71.

Annabelle Ackroyd of Silver Springs Golf and Country Club wasn’t looking to win going into the championship. “I was looking for two good scores,” she says. “I was focused even after my lead (on day one).”

Ackroyd has had a successful tournament this season, including a tie for second place in the 2015 Juvenile Girls Championship, which earned her a spot on the interprovincial team. Ackroyd ends the Alberta Bantam Girl’s Championship at +19, 161, after 36 holes.

Harrison Proves Unstoppable, Wins Alberta Junior Championship

Andrew HarrisonCALGARY, Alberta — After maintaining first place for four days straight, Andrew Harrison is the 2015 Alberta Junior Boys Champion. The 18 year old from Camrose Golf Club took home the title 13 strokes ahead of the competition. Harrison started the first round of the tournament strong and continued to build on his lead, ending round four with 9 under par.

Harrison left the scoring tent grinning ear to ear. “This is my biggest tournament win,” he explained.

Sang Won KimCALGARY, Alberta — Another record field size for Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour was witnessed over the May long weekend in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Golf Alberta Order of Merit Series at Heritage Pointe Golf Club in Dewinton, AB, where a heavily wait-listed field of 106 junior golfers competed for titles in six divisions on May 17th and 18th. The tournament was also a shortlist qualifier for the IMG Academy Junior World Championships in San Diego, CA, this July.
