Lauren BrescacinEDMONTON, Alberta (Gord Montgomery/iG) — While only one person walks away with the award as the top performer in their specific category each year at the PGA of Alberta Awards Banquet, that doesn’t mean that dozens — no, hundreds — of others are equally as well qualified to take away the same honour.

Through a lengthy process the nominees for a dozen such awards are chosen and then from there a winner selected. Those were announced during the annual Buying Show, held on October 17-20, 2016, at the Expo Centre in Edmonton.

“It is difficult to select our finalists and it is equally as difficult to select just one individual to accept each award,” said the event’s emcee, Tom Greiner, who is the president of the PGA of Alberta board of directors. “The award nominees, and finalists in each category, are all deserving of receiving these awards.”

Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course(Gord Montgomery/iG) — My Dear Alberta Friends,

Please forgive me for not writing sooner, but given the state of affairs I find myself in over the past while, it has truly been rather difficult to keep in touch.

However, that being said, I think you’ll forgive my negligence with this special offering I have for you to enjoy two of my favourite golf facilities in Western Canada — the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club.

altEDMONTON, Alberta (Gord Montgomery/iG) — For many Alberta golf courses, and those that wander their green fair-ways, 2016 could be a banner year. This past winter has been short and thus the golf sea-son becomes a long one leading to more rounds for players and more revenue for facilities

For the most part, courses from the bottom of the province to the top have seen their ear-liest ever opening. In fact, things teed off in Calgary in February when Fox Hollow GC turned divot diggers loose on Feb. 16, albeit on temps.

“It was huge. People were just loving it,” said head pro Greg Griffith about those early gate crashers, adding the track moved to regulation greens around the middle of March.

While this may not have been a record for early opening, this year is the earliest ever they’ve been on “real greens,” said Griffith. “We’ve always opened up on temps but this stretch of being open is definitely the earliest.
