Forsythe Shortlisted At Ken-Wo For MJT Team Canada To Australia

WOLFVILLE, Nova Scotia — The second Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in Atlantic Canada this season saw Zachary Forsythe, 17, of Coldbrook, NS, fire rounds of 72,76=148 to hold off Matthew Chandler, 18, of Chester, NS, and claim the MJT Junior Boys Division title as well as Low Overall at Ken-Wo Golf Club in Wolfville, NS, where players where competing for titles in six divisions as well as the chance to qualify for shortlisted positions on MJT Team Canada to Australia.
“I feel great about my win, I had a lot of fun playing and competing,” said Forsythe, who is now short-listed for a spot to Australia to compete in the Jack Newton International Junior Classic in New South Wales this October. “The course was in great shape and I enjoyed the challenge.”
Highlights on the other division champions at the June 10 and 11 event are featured below, and overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website HERE showing winners of the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards.
MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 winner was John Mosher, 16, of Halifax, NS, who shot 77,78=155 to edge Mark Chandler, 15, of Chester, by one stroke. “I feel good about winning. I didn’t hit the ball well but I dug in the entire weekend. Although I struggled a bit, a win is a win and I am very grateful for it,” said Mosher, “I didn’t give up once, I struggled on the back but forced myself to grind it out.”
Owen Mullen, 13, of Truro, NS, won the MJT Bantam Boys 13-14 title by five strokes after shooting 76,77=153. Mullen said, “I am happy because after my first day I knew I was going to have to play solid to win and I got off to a good start which allowed me to have the rough finish that I had and still won.”
MJT Peewee Boys 11-12 winner was Gavin Ives, 12, of Middle Sackville, NS, after he carded 86-97=183 for a four stroke victory over than Max Baldwin, 11, of Hammonds Plains, NS. “I feel proud of myself because Max and I were tied and then I won,” Ives said.
Laura Jones, 18, of Berry Mills, NB, scored solid rounds of 79,83=162 to win the MJT Girls 15-18 title by seven strokes over Haley Baker of Halifax, NS. Jones was asked what was the best part of her game this weekend - “I minimized my mistakes and managed key shots pretty well. Ken-Wo was in absolutely great shape, it’s a beautiful course, and was a pleasure to play.”
MJT Girls U15 winner by eight strokes was Abbey Baker, 12, of Halifax, NS, (93,88=181), who said afterwards, “I feel very good, because I played not too well the first day and I played better the second day, my drives were always in the middle of the fairway.”
The next two Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stops in Atlantic Canada are the MJT Golf NB Player of the Year Series at Fox Creek Golf Club in Dieppe, NB, on July 22 and 23, followed by the three-day MJT Atlantic Canada Tour Championship at Fox Harb’r Resort in Wallace, NS, on August 25 to 27.
