Christina Lake Ready To Host British Columbia Golf Bantam & Novice Championships

The 2017 British Columbia Golf Bantam & Novice Championships take place Monday, August 21, to Tuesday, August 22, at Christina Lake Golf Club in Grand Forks alongside the Kettle River in BC's beautiful Kooteny/Rockies region.

The Bantam Championships are open to players aged 14 and younger as of August 1st. There are two Championships — Bantam Boys & Bantam Girls. Each event is a 36-hole stroke play (2 rounds) — gross event.

For the Novice Championships (Boys & Girls), players will play off a shorter set of tees. Entry into the novice events will be for players with a higher handicap factor, to be determined by the final field. The Championship is a Net Stableford. Maximum field size is 90 players.

In 2016 the Bantam & Novice Championships were held at Bowen Island GC where Vancouver's Ilirian Zalli won the Boys Bantam Title and Rossland's Xander Bankes took the Novice division with the Girl's Bantam title going to Victoria's Akari Hayashi.

Zalli has aged out of the Bantam category while Bankes will move up to that division at Christina Lake GC this year. Hayashi has also moved up to the next age category.

Course Description
Established in 1962 as a 9-hole course, the Christina Lake Golf Course was expanded to an 18-hole, 6,785 yard course in 1986. The course expansion was designed by Les Furber and shows off his signature architecture with elevated tees, strategically bunkered greens and fairways, multi-tiered greens and four holes featuring water hazards. This is the first course in Canada to offer the unique feature of black sand traps. The course is regarded as one of the top 25 in British Columbia.

The signature hole on the course is the 9th, a 215 yard par three. An elevated tee box looks down upon a green bordered by two sand traps on the right and a large lateral water hazard along the full length of its left side.

Located on the scenic Kettle River, the course is surrounded by ponderosa pine and fir trees, with the Monashee and Selkirk Mountains providing a beautiful backdrop.

The course is located minutes from Christina Lake (known as the warmest lake in Canada) and is only a half mile from the Cascade-Laurier U.S. border (two hours north of Spokane) and two hours southeast of Kelowna.
