PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (LPGA) — The sixth edition of the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic is just over a month away, and for the fourth time it will be the season-opener on the LPGA schedule. Preparations at the Ocean Club Golf Course at Atlantis Resort are underway for the US$1.4 million event scheduled for January 22-28, 2018.
It might be difficult to top the excitement of the 2017 tournament when Brittany Lincicome, a Pure Silk ambassador, defeated Lexi Thompson on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. Both players completed 72 holes in a record 26-under 266 on the par-37 Ocean Course – one of several records set last year. Lincicome two-putted from 20 feet at the par-5 18th hole in the playoff and then watched Thompson miss a tying birdie try from 12 feet. It was Lincicome’s seventh LPGA victory, and she won for just the third time in 11 career playoffs to collect US$210,000.
“It’s hard to think of a better place to begin our season than in the Bahamas with our friends at Pure Silk,” LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan said. “The Islands and Global Golf have always treated our organization with extraordinary hospitality, and our players love coming down to kick start a new year in paradise.”
The Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic is one of four professional golf events to be played in the Bahamas in a two-month period, joining the Hero World Challenge, which is hosted by Tiger Woods, and two Web.com Tour tournaments.
“Through our co-title sponsorship of the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic we have enjoyed a wonderful partnership with the LPGA and Global Golf Management these past five years,” said Director General, Joy Jibrilu, director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. “Our sponsorship has enabled us to showcase Nassau/Paradise as a great golf destination in the first instance, which we have no doubt has enabled us to now host three PGA golf tournaments in The Bahamas – Exuma, Abaco and at Albany.”
“We're excited to start the beginning of the LPGA season in the beautiful Bahamas again this January,” said John Price, President of Perio, Inc., parent company of Pure Silk. “This marks the sixth year for the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, and we're proud to continue our partnership with the LPGA, where you will see the best female golf professionals in the world.”
“With the 2018 LPGA season beginning in January, we are excited to kick things off in The Bahamas,” Norell said. “The Ocean Club Golf Course serves as the perfect venue for this event, and our tournament staff has been busy prepping and preparing for the sixth installment of the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic. We understand the bar is set high for the first event of the year and the over 400 volunteers needed for this event help to make this possible. Our volunteer program has continued to grow over the years, and the Bahamian community has embraced this opportunity with open arms. Over 20 local organizations, including schools, rotaries, banks, Kiwanis clubs, and the Bahamas Golf Federation participate tournament week, and we can’t say thank you enough.”
