Maxwell Marks First MJT Win With Low Overall In MJT Ford Series At Olds

OLDS, Alberta — The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Ford Series at Olds Central Highlands Golf Club played out under new protocols in Olds, Alberta, on August 10 and 11, featuring 36 holes of competition for a full field, great prizing, and a Ford Hole in One contest where players had the chance to win a new car on the 13th hole on the second day courtesy of Cam Clark Ford Olds. The event followed a one-day Mini Tour event and a Ford Go Golf Free Junior Clinic on August 9 .
Low Overall score for the competition went to 17-year-old Paxton Maxwell in the MJT Junior Boys Division. The Magrath, AB, resident, who is in his first year of competing on the MJT Alberta circuit, picked up his first career victory shooting scores of 72 and 73 (145). “I was just trying to put myself in good positions,” commented Maxwell. “I was putting the ball in play off the tee and hitting greens. It feels good knowing that hard work is paying off.”
Zachary Haydamack, 15, of Rocky View County, AB, earned his third 2020 MJT Juvenile Boys title after firing 73 and 75 (148). “The key to my victory was my putting, these greens were really fast so my weight control had to be on point,” commented Haydamack. “It feels great to win this tournament knowing how strong the field was.”
Jayden Brar, 13, of Calgary, AB, completed the comeback in the MJT Bantam Boys Division. Brar carded a 75 on the first day to sit tied for fourth place and five shots back of the lead. Using the entirety of his second round, Brar chipped away at the lead eventually finishing with a 73 (148) and a one-shot victory. “It feels amazing (to win) – knowing I was five down with eight holes to go,” remarked Brar. “I didn’t get mad with my bad play; I continued to hit good shots and trusted my game.” Josiah Tong, 14, of Heritage Pointe, AB, climbed up the leaderboard throughout the event recording scores of 76 and 73 (149) to finish the division in second place.
In the MJT Girls 15-19 Division, Calgary’s Grace Bell fired the low individual round of the competition with a 68 on the first day. The 17-year-old golfer struggled on the second day carding a score of 80 (148) but held on to win the division by one shot. “Starting off the [competition] was really nice,” commented Bell about her new personal best score. “It gave me some breathing room going into the second day.” Mounting a noteworthy comeback in the division was Edmonton, AB, golfer Jenna Bruggeman, 17, who shot 77 and 72 (149) to finish in the runner-up spot.
The MJT Girls U15 title was convincingly captured by 14-year-old Jayla Kucy. The Camrose, AB, resident fired identical rounds of 76 (152) to pick up her third 2020 MJT win in as many starts. “I was playing my own game and not worrying about how many over I was,” commented Kucy.
12-year-old Brae Rogalczyk, of Innisfail, AB, carded rounds of 75 and 80 (155) to take home the Hoselton trophy in the MJT Peewee Boys Division. Commenting on his mental game, Rogalczyk remarked, “My key to victory was keeping the mental side of the game after a bad hole.” With his performance at Olds Golf Club, Rogalczyk earned his second MJT title this year.
