Smith Shoots 69, 69 In MJT Humber College PGM Atlantic Championship At Fox Harb’r Resort

WALLACE, Nova Scotia — Canada’s number one -played Junior Golf Tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, witnessed an impressive finale to its Atlantic Canada schedule this past August 19 and 20 in Wallace, NS, with 75 junior golfers competing for titles in six divisions at the MJT Humber College PGM Atlantic Championship at Fox Harb’r Resort. This two-day competition marked the final opportunity for players to qualify for the prestigious MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas golf at Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey, BC, to be held in mid-October.

Sensational scoring in the MJT Junior Boys Division in the form of a pair of 69s (138) including eight birdies from 17-year old Jake Smith of Dartmouth, NS, saw him come back and win the division and Humber College PGM Low Overall Champion’s title by one shot. “I played pretty consistently throughout the [competition],” commented Smith, who made only two bogeys through 36 holes of play. Owen Mullen, 17, of Truro, NS, fired rounds of 65 and 74 (139) to take second place.

The MJT Juvenile Boys Division witnessed a tie at the top of the leaderboard after two days between 16-year old Ethan Efford (74, 72 – 146), of St. John’s, NL, and 16-year old Dimitri Mihelakos (73, 73 – 146), of Halifax, NS. Emerging victorious from the playoff was Efford, who earned his first career MJT title in his first ever appearance. “It feels awesome to win my first MJT event,” commented Efford. “I know that all of the hard work is worth it and I’m really proud of myself.”

MJT veteran Simon Mullen, 14, pulled away with the win in the MJT Bantam Boys Division with scores of 77 and 79 (156). The Truro junior golfer sat two shots back of the lead after the opening round and held on throughout the second day to earn his fourth MJT title. “I was hitting the ball well,” mentioned Mullen. “I just kept focused.”

No stranger to the leaderboard in the MJT Peewee Boys Division was 12-year old Rylan Sutherland, of Brookfield, NS. Sutherland fired rounds of 77 and 80 (157) to win the division by four shots. “It feels great to win and I can’t wait to come back next year,” he commented.

MJT past-champion Mackenzie Deveau, 17, made her return to the top of the podium in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division. The Moncton, NB, resident shot 80 and 82 (162) to acquire her second 2020 MJT title. “I stayed focused on my next shot,” remarked Deveau when asked about her strategy behind her win.

Capturing the MJT Girls U15 title by three shots was 12-year old Avery Cohen, of New Glasgow, NS. Cohen, playing in her first full year on the MJT, picked up her first win at Fox Harb’r Resort firing scores of 84 and 98 (182) and stated, “I kept positive out there.”
