Spectacular Mickelson National Golf Club Hosts MJT Presented By Reimer Golf And U Of C Dinos

CALGARY, Alberta — The outstanding, new Mickelson National Golf Club in Calgary, AB, hosted the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Alberta Series presented by Reimer Golf and U of C Dinos on August 24 and 25 – the course’s first ever event, outside of their club championship. A wait-listed field of young players were privileged to enjoy a spectacular layout, undiminished by the sudden windstorm on day one, as they competed for titles in six divisions and attempted to qualify for the prestigious MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf at Morgan Creek Golf Course in BC this October.

Making an eagle and nine birdies in the MJT Junior Boys Division, great golf fitting for the great venue, was 17-year old Nico Aulicino. The Calgary golfer fired a pair of 72s (144), coming back from a two-shot deficit after the first day to win the division by a single shot. “It feels good to win,” commented Aulicino, who earned his first 2020 MJT title at Mickelson National and claimed the Low Overall score for the competition. 17-year old Nicolas Rimmer, of Edmonton, AB, vaulted into a second-place finish with scores of 75 and 70 (145).

In the MJT Girls 15-19 Division, it was MJT-veteran Jenna Bruggeman who commanded the field, shooting 76 and 70 (146) to win in convincing fashion. The 17-year old golfer from Edmonton, AB, picked up her second MJT title of the season.  “Hitting greens was the key,” commented Bruggeman, who hit an impressive 35/36 greens over the two days. “That made for a lot of low stress pars.”

Completing the comeback in the MJT Juvenile Boys Division and earning his fourth MJT title was 15-year old Zachary Haydamack of Rocky View County, AB, who tied for the greatest improvement between the two rounds in the division. Haydamack carded an 80 on the first day, making a couple big numbers on the back nine of his first round and faced a nine-shot deficit. Holding it together on day two, Haydamack recorded an eagle and four birdies to finish three-under on his back nine including a birdie on the 18th hole for a one-shot victory. “I came back on the second day with a better mindset,” he commented. “It feels awesome to win knowing I was down by nine shots before the second round.”

Brett Jones, 14, captured the Hoselton trophy in the MJT Bantam Boys Division with scores of 75 and 73 (148). The Calgary-native sat tied for the lead after the first day and opened his second round with a one-under front nine. Jones held on from there to win his second 2020 MJT title, stating, “I played pretty [conservative] off the tee.”

12-year old Tate MacKenzie won the MJT Peewee Boys Division by just a single shot. The Calgary player carded 79 and 82 (162), holding off a charge from behind to win his first career MJT competition. “I kept a positive mindset,” commented MacKenzie, when asked about the key to his victory. “I played it safe on the second round and it feels great to follow up from a good first day.” 12-year old Brae Rogalczyk, of Innisfail, AB, fired scores of 88 and 74 (161) to climb up to second place and earn the Booster Juice Comeback Award for the division.

Calgary’s Tessa Ion’s consistency led to her second MJT victory of the 2020 season in the Girls U15 Division. The 14-year old golfer shot 86 and 87 (173) to win the Hoselton trophy by six strokes. “My tee shots put me in good position and kept me out of trouble,” mentioned Ion. “It feels good that I was able to win my division with the tough conditions and finishing late in the day.”

Full results from the event can be viewed here. The next stop on the 2020 Alberta Schedule is the MJT Humber College PGM presented by TaylorMade at Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Club in Banff, AB, on September 6 and 7. More information is available at www.maplejt.com.
