Comebacks And Playoff Highlight MJT ClubLink Series At Caledon Woods

BOLTON, Ontario — Canada’s number one-played Junior Tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, hosted another successful stop in the ClubLink Series - the MJT ClubLink Series at Caledon Woods Golf Club in Bolton, on August 24 and 25, where a full field of young players competed for titles in six divisions. All were also vying for spots into the prestigious MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf at Morgan Creek Golf Course on October 9 to 12 in Surrey, BC.

The MJT Junior Boys Division witnessed 18-year old Bavake Sihota take it low on the second day to claim his second 2020 MJT Hoselton trophy in as many starts. The Caledon, ON, resident, after shooting 73 on the first day to sit two shots back of the lead, made a charge on the second day firing a 68 (141) and coming back to win the division by six shots. “The key for me was believing that I could win,” commented Sihota.

Great scoring from Mississauga, ON, player Bo Brown, led to her first MJT victory of the 2020 season in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division. The 16-year old fired a fine pair of 72s (144), coming back from a one-shot deficit after the first day to win the title by six shots. “I was hitting lots of fairways and greens,” commented Brown, whose work from tee to green was immaculate. “It feels good that all my hard work has paid off.”

The MJT Juvenile Boys Division needed extra holes to determine winner. After two days of play, 16-year old Ethan Irvine (75, 71), of Ancaster, ON, and 15-year old Matteo Rocco (71, 75), of Toronto, ON, finished tied for the lead with total scores of 151, trading rounds on both days. After both players tied the first playoff hole, Irvine made an incredible up-and-down on the second hole to win the Hoselton trophy. “I felt good heading into the playoff because I’ve done a couple of them before and it was with one of my buddy’s,” said Irvine. “I won with a bunker save for birdie on a short par four.”

13-year old Matthew Rastogi, of North York, ON, got off to the start he was looking for in the MJT Bantam Boys Division. Rastogi blazed his way around the course with an event-low 66 on the first day including an eagle and six birdies, putting himself in a commanding lead. He followed up with a 77 to pick up his second MJT win in 2020. “I had a lot of momentum from the first day,” remarked Rastogi. “I’m looking forward to playing more on the MJT.”

Tara O’Connor, 14, continues to be an absolute force on the MJT this year acquiring her fifth Girls U15 title. The Guelph, ON, product carded identical scores of 75 (150) to win the division in commanding fashion. O’Connor has made great strides on the MJT since beginning to compete in 2018 and will be looking to continue her excellence in the older division shortly.

Aurora, ON, golfer Eddie Gu continues to impress this year on the MJT earning another win in the Peewee Boys Division. The 10-year old rising star carded scores of 74 and 73 (147) making six birdies along the way. “The MJT has helped me improve a lot,” commented Gu, who acquired his fifth MJT title of the season.
