Rimmer Races Away With MJT Ford Series Low Overall At RedTail Landing

NISKU, Alberta — The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour hosted its final Albertan event of the 2020 season in the hamlet of Nisku, located in Leduc County, where elite young golfers competed for titles in six divisions in the MJT Ford Series at RedTail Landing Golf Club. Held in conjunction with the two-day tour event was a Nisku Ford Go Golf Junior Clinic for beginners, offering kids between the ages of six and twelve a free introduction to the game from the MJT and PGA of Alberta Professionals.

The Ford Series Low Overall title was won by 17-year old Nicholas Rimmer, of Edmonton, AB, after he cruised to victory in the MJT Junior Boys Division. Rimmer opened the competition with seven birdies for a tournament-low 66. He followed that with a round of 73 on the second day to win his first 2020 MJT title. “It feels good to get my first win of the year,” commented Rimmer. “It gives me a lot of confidence going into the National Championship.” Rimmer will be looking to take his game to Surrey, BC, for the invitation-only MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf at Morgan Creek.

Two solid rounds by Edmonton’s Kaitlyn Wingnean led to her first career MJT victory in the Girls 15-19 Division. The 17-year old golfer fired 78 and 77 (155) to win the title by two shots. “I was very consistent and focused throughout the [competition],” remarked Wingnean after her win. “It feels really good to win the division title because of all the hard work I’ve put in this summer to further my golf game.”

The MJT Juvenile Boys Division witnessed a playoff between 15-year old Ethan Howes (145), of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, and 16-year old Reid Casavant (145), of Westlock, AB. Casavant had an impressive first round, firing a 70 with two eagles and three birdies. He followed that up with a second-round score of 75 that saw an even-par back nine to tie for the lead. Howes, on the other hand, carded an opening round of 74 to sit four shots back of the lead, then came out fighting on the second day, shooting a two-under front nine (71), enough to force the playoff. Howes, who had a hole-in-one last year at this event to win a brand new Ford, channeled that winning feeling again this year and won the playoff for his first career MJT title. “I managed to stay calm when the pressure built,” mentioned Howes. “I avoided the big numbers and the three putts.”

The MJT Girls U15 Division saw 14-year old Jayla Kucy complete the comeback to win the division title by three shots. Kucy fired an 81 on day one to sit five shots back of the lead. Kucy shifted gear on the second day, firing a 74 with three birdies to surge ahead for the win. “It feels good to win as my hard work has paid off,” commented Kucy, whose game has developed significantly this year on the MJT. “I stayed positive and used my distance to help reach the par fives in two shots.”

Holding on for a one-shot win in the MJT Bantam Boys Division was 14-year old MJT veteran champion Tate Bruggeman. The Edmonton product, who earned his 11th career MJT title, recorded scores of 71 and 75 (146), making six birdies over two days. “I played solid and didn’t make many mistakes,” commented Bruggeman, who kept a tidy scorecard. “I feel good, winning on the MJT.”

High River, AB’s 12-year old River Rommens shot 82 and 80 (162) in the MJT Peewee Boys Division to pick up a one-shot win for his first MJT title. Rommens, who is only in his first year of competing on the MJT, was happy to enter the winner’s circle with his performance at RedTail Landing Golf Club. “I am honored to win my division title as it has been a long time coming,” commented Rommens. “I made some clutch putts coming down the stretch and managed to keep everything contained.”
