The spectacular scenery of iconic Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course in Banff, Alberta, created a dramatic backdrop for every shot played in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Humber College PGM Classic presented by TaylorMade. A deep field of 100 young golfers were competing for titles in six divisions and the chance to earn valuable points on the MJT’s RBC Order of Merit in qualification for the MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf in Surrey, BC, this October.
A scorching round of 67 sealed the deal for Calgary, AB, resident Aneesh Kaura, who won his second MJT Juvenile Boys title of the season (67-75=142). The 16-year-old golfer has emerged as a top contender this year on the MJT, earning the low overall score honors for the tournament in addition to his division title. “Going into the tournament, I felt like I needed to regain some confidence,” commented Kaura. “After getting the win, it feels great knowing that the hard work and dedication to my game had paid off.” Calgary, AB, golfer Jaiden Koonar, 16, after earning a win last week at the MJT Ford Series-PGA of Alberta Junior Championship at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club, recorded scores of 71 and 74 (145) to finish runner-up.
Paxton Maxwell, 18, fired great rounds of 70 and 75 (145) to win the MJT Junior Boys title by five shots. The Magrath, AB, player, who saw himself up by just a single shot after the first day, kept his game steady on his way to his second MJT win over the last two years. “I would say my driver and irons won me the tournament,” commented Maxwell. “I was hitting lots of fairways and greens and played well through the challenging wind on the second day.” Calgary, AB, golfer Joel Sullivan, 18, was runner-up with scores of 71 and 79 (150).
Earning his first career MJT title at Fairmont Banff Springs was 14-year-old Tobias Buffman in the MJT Bantam Boys Division, after the Calgary, AB, player pulled out a major comeback with a blistering final round of 67 (77-67=144). “I had been playing well this past week, so I felt confident going into the tournament,” commented Buffman. “I putted really well in both rounds and it felt great to get the win knowing that I had to come back to get it.” Runner-up was Brae Rogalczyk, 13, of Innisfail, AB, who shot scores of 71 and 77 (148).
The MJT Girls 15-19 Division saw a comeback from 16-year-old Brynne Davies, of Calgary, AB. Davies, who found herself in a two-shot deficit after the first round. Davies carded 82 and 79 (161) to win the title by three shots. “I had spent some time with my coach and that allowed me to feel more confident and play more aggressive,” said Davies. Jade Carter, 15, of Calgary, AB, took home the runner-up position with solid scores of 80 and 84 (164).
After picking up three runner-up finishes this year on the MJT in Alberta, 12-year-old Calgary golfer Kali Yeske entered the winner’s circle in the Girls U15 Division after firing rounds of 85 and 90 (175). “My irons were the best part of my game,” mentioned Yeske after her first win of the season. “I overcame some bad shots and windy conditions to get the victory.” Olivia Johnson, 12, of Calgary, AB, shot 88, 95 (183) to finish second.
Chase Strang, 11, of Airdrie, AB, shot 84 and 78 (162) to come back and win the MJT Peewee Boys title by three shots. “I felt pretty confident with my putting and chipping this week,” commented Strang. “It feels great to get the win and also improve on my score on the second day by six strokes.” Brady Wagner, 12, of Sherwood Park, AB, earned the runner-up spot with scores of 83 and 82 (165).
The MJT Alberta Junior Tour circuit next heads to Turner Valley for the MJT G&G Prodigy Series at Turner Valley GC on August 3 and 4. More details can be found online at www.maplejt.com.
