NISKU, Alberta — The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour concluded its highly successful 2021 Alberta Tour season in Nisku with the MJT Ford Series at RedTail Landing Golf Club, where junior golfers from across the province competed in six age divisions. The event, which featured a hole-in-one contest to win a new Ford EcoSport, was also complimented by a free MJT Nisku Ford Go Golf Junior Clinic to give kids in the community an introduction to the game.

In the MJT Juvenile Boys Division, 16-year-old Zachary Haydamack, of Rocky View County, AB, was on fire despite the cold temperatures, carding the impressive low overall score for the tournament. Haydamack, who has consistently been at the top of the MJT leaderboards, shot sizzling hot rounds of 67 and 69 (136) to win the title by six shots. “My putting was definitely responsible for my win,” commented Haydamack. “I made some clutch putts from three to eight feet which helped secure the victory.” Calgary, AB’s Ryan Gillis, 15, shot 73 and 69 (142) to finish runner-up in the division.

Ethan Wilson, 17, of St. Albert, AB, also heated up the leaderboard, shooting scores of 69 and 68 (137) to win the MJT Ford Series at RedTail Landing Junior Boys title. Wilson, who saw himself in a steady lead after the first day, continued with his fine performance by recording the lowest individual rounds for both days in his division. “My game was trending in the right direction, it felt good to put together two solid rounds of tournament golf,” commented Wilson. “The greens were really nice and I was able to roll in a few putts.” After opening with a score of 75, 17-year-old Christian Hansen, of Okotoks, AB, fired a 69 on day two for a total of 144, securing second place in the division.

Winning her third 2021 title in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division was 16-year-old Georgia Barr, of Calgary, AB. Barr fired excellent rounds of 71 and 73 (144) to hold off a charge from behind and win by just a single shot. “I felt confident going into this tournament and I proved that my game is still strong even in some tougher weather conditions,” commented Barr. “I was able to hit fairways and greens when it was windy and cold and that was most responsible for getting me the win.” Camrose, AB, resident Jayla Kucy, 15, made a great comeback on the second day to finish runner-up with scores of 76 and 69 (145).

After being one shot behind going into day two, 14-year-old Dane Giesbrecht, of Warman, SK, put on the pressure with rock-steady scores of 72 and 72 (144) to win the MJT Ford Series at RedTail Landing Bantam Boys title. “My irons and wedges were most responsible for the win,” commented Giesbrecht, who was dialed-in both days. “I felt like my ball striking was very good coming into the tournament and I struck the ball well both days.” Chase Lassman, 13, of Parkland County, AB, carded 75 and 76 (151) to take home second place.

The beat goes on for 12-year-old Eileen Park of Red Deer, AB, who has swept the leaderboards in the MJT Girls U15 Division this year in Alberta. Park shot great scores of 71 and 74 (145) to win another title in convincing fashion. “This was a great year of MJT golf,” commented Park. “The course was in great shape and my chipping really helped my game a lot.”

In the MJT Peewee Boys Division, 11-year-old Jayden Arnold, of Calgary, AB, shot 75 and 79 (154) to win the title by six shots. “My driver did a good job of setting me up for good approaches to the greens,” commented Arnold. “I feel very happy to win the last MJT Alberta tournament.” After opening with a score of 84 on the first day, 11-year-old Lucas Sturgeon, of Saskatoon, SK, fired a 76 on day two to vault into second place with a total of 160.

The Booster Juice BounceBack Awards for best improvement in score in round two over round one went to Samantha Lin of Edmonton, Sydney Bisgrove of Calgary, Ryan Johnson of Calgary, Ryan Badger of Edmonton, Matthew Workun of Sylvan Lake and Spence Matson of Lethbridge.
