Packed Field Of Top Juniors Tee Off MJT’s 24th Season With Rain-Shortened Humber College PGM Classic In Vancouver

Tournament Highlights

  • The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s number one-played junior tour, launched its 24th and largest season to date of close to 100 events with the MJT Humber College PGM Classic at University Golf Club in Vancouver, British Columbia, March 12 through 14. 
  • Heavily wait-listed event saw 100 top junior golfers take part from across British Columbia and Alberta.
  • Due to heavy rain making the course unplayable on the final day, the tournament was shortened to a two-day event only.
  • Joshua Ince 16, of Surrey, BC, fires excellent rounds of 68-71 en route to Low Overall Boys Champion, earning an exemption into the ATB Future Stars Invitational and qualifying for the 2022 International Junior Masters in East Aurora, New York.
  • Yeji Kwon, 16, of Port Coquitlam, B.C., was Low Overall Girls Champion with outstanding scores of 69-67, earning AJGA PBE Stars.

“I feel proud to win this tournament and confident for the next one,” summed up Amy Lee, who shot 74-77 (151) to win the MJT Girls U15 title by three strokes.

“It feels good to start the season off with a win,”stated 16 year-old Yeji Kwon, of Port Coquitlam, B.C., who fired outstanding rounds of 69, 67 (136) to be crowned Low Overall Girls Champion along with her MJT Girls 15-19 division title. “I made a swing change [prior to the tournament], and because of that I had some good shots this weekend.”

“I really worked hard on getting stronger and hitting the ball further,” commented MJT Peewee Boys division champion, Jeevyn Lotay, 12, of Burnaby, BC, who defended his title from last year. “In the cold and wet conditions, the extra distance gave me an advantage and helped me with a successful tournament this weekend.”

“My off-season training has given me a lot of grit and determination,” said Joshua Ince, 16, of Surrey, B.C., the Low Overall Boys and MJT Juvenile Boys division champion, who recorded scores of 68,71 (139). “It feels good that I won this tournament, and proved to myself that my game is where it needs to be.”

“I made a commitment last October to put more time into my game.” commented Nik Jaakkola, 18, of North Vancouver, B.C., who tied for the lead in the MJT Junior Boys division but won the champion’s trophy based on best second day score. “I’d like to thank my coach for helping me get my game to the level where I could win this weekend. It’s nice to see hard work pay off.”
