Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club

(Part 3 of 4 of Surrey, B.C. Courses)

To a camel, Hump Day has to be the best day of the week. But for golfers in Surrey, B.C., any day of the week is the best because golf here in the Lower Mainland is that good.

The Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club, which is part of the 4-course West Coast Golf Group, isn’t one of those tracks that’s going to blow you away with yardages, playing to just over 6,400 yards off the blue tees and 6,000 from the white boxes. But again, this is a course at sea level, so those distances are more than they seem. And given the tree-lined fairways you encounter here, those yardages are more than sufficient to put your skills and course management to the test.

Frank Fourchalk, the General Manager at this Surrey course, explained the original design was put into play in the early 1960s but has undergone a grounds mulligan since then. “They completely renovated the golf course, which ran from 1998 to 2001. What they did was to rebuild two holes at a time. We stayed open the whole time,” by building two temporary holes which kept the layout as a full 18 holes.

Since it sits in such an ideal spot for weather, Hazelmere is an extended season club and, as Fourchalk noted, “is super fun to play. That was our focus and it is playable all year,” which is evidenced by the number of rounds played here, approximately 55,000 per year.

What was done with the redesign, the GM explained, was that the course was taken from its lacklustre layout in the early days to an enjoyable walk and challenge today. “Essentially, it was a cow field,” he said of the original design. “Now, it’s in incredible shape. Incredible shape all year long. In the winter months, you still want to stay on the fairway, but obviously our biggest focus is the greens, greens’ quality. That’s our philosophy and we are constantly looking at future upgrading and what are we going to do next?”

As many courses do in this day and age, Hazelmere uses dynamic pricing, meaning the closer you book to your desired tee time, the possibility exists that higher prices come into play — with a caveat, or course.

“We do set a ceiling and a bottom, but it depends on the day and time of the week. Busier days of the week, busier times, prices are higher. But that being said, if you’re flexible, you can really find some really great deals.”

With a strong golf market on a year-round basis in the Surrey area, the question comes up about how a course stands out from others. To that, Fourchalk replied, “It’s always been our philosophy in offering a consistent product, a good product. When prices go up or get driven by demand, it gets to the point where you still have to be offering good value for that product. As far back as I can remember, we want to offer a great product and offer a fair price for it.”

And that’s what you’ll find at Hazelmere. Even though big hitters may think they can bomb away and score well here, given the yardages, they’ll find out soon enough that conservative play and course management amongst all the trees and hazards is the way to go.
