LETHBRIDGE, Alberta (MJT) — Young golfers aged 11 and under from three different provinces battled through high winds and hot temperatures on the Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour's Mini Tour at Evergreen Golf Centre in Lethbridge, AB, on Sunday, May 27, with hopes to secure a shortlist position for the IMG Academy Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California in July and US Kids Golf World Championships at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina in August. The confirmed exemptions will be announced once qualifying has finished across the country.
MJT Boys 8U
Matthew Cui, 7, of Burnaby, BC, led the way firing an impressive 62 to win the MJT Boys 8U division by five shots over Lucas Sturgeon, 8, of Saskatoon, SK. Cui, who is now shortlisted for both the trip to the IMG Academy Junior Worlds and US Kids Golf World Championship, achieved the goal he set saying, “I came to Lethbridge because I wanted to qualify for both those events.”
MJT Boys 9-10
Another BC native was victorious in Lethbridge as Cheho An, 9, of Surrey, BC, squeaked out a one-shot victory over Tyler Kidd, 10, of Buck Lake, AB. Similar to Cui, An’s goal was to qualify for one of the major international events, and his round of 65 was good enough to get him shortlisted for the US Kids World Championship for one of the age-specific spots, alongside Kidd.
MJT Boys 11-12
Kerrick Norrie Asquith, 11, of Lethbridge, AB, and Leyton Arthur, also 11, of Calgary, AB, battled all day with Asquith coming out on top by one stroke to win the MJT Boys 11-12 title. Asquith, when asked how he felt about winning his division said, “I feel proud of myself and I made a new friend.”
MJT Girls
Eileen Park, 8, of Red Deer, AB shot an impressive 74 in the Girls 8U division to get herself on the shortlist to go to 2018 US Kids World Championship. Stacie Hansen, 9, of Okotoks, AB and Tessa Ion, 11, of Calgary, AB also competed this weekend and shot 109 and 92 respectively.
Full results including PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin competition winners are posted on the MJT website.
The next MJT Mini Tour stop in Alberta is the MJT Mini Tour / Future Champions Golf Callaway World Championship Qualifier at River Bend Golf Course in Red Deer, AB on June 9. The FCG Callaway World Championship will be played in Palm Springs, CA, July 16-18, 2018. MJT Mini-Tour Order of Merit points will also be up for grabs, and these rankings will determine the field for the 2018 MJT Mini Tour National Championship presented by Ford Canada at Tsawwassen Springs in late August.
