Canadian Records Hole-In-One At Major Tournament For MJT Team Canada In Australia

By THE MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour members recently wrapped up MJT Team Canada’s 11th consecutive appearance in the Jack Newton International Junior Classic at Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club in Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia, October 1 to 5, 2018, a tournament billed as the ‘largest junior golf event in the Southern Hemisphere’ with almost 400 players travelling from around the world to take part.

The four-day competition was highlighted by a hole-in-one by Canada’s Kaiden Nicholson, 17, of Edmonton, AB, recorded on the fifth hole during the second round. One of the rarest feats in golf propelled Nicholson to low Canadian honours at the event finishing with rounds of 79, 74, 79, 80 (312), and a t-45 finish. Weather wrecked havoc on the players all week, especially during the third round where the golf course took 12 straight hours of wind and rain. The other Canadian boys in the field were Graem Costigan, 15, of Cambridge, ON, who finished at 316 (78, 74, 82, 82) and Neel Soni, 16, of Winnipeg, MB, who finished at 324 (78, 75, 90, 81).

In the Girls division, the Canadian contingent of Stephanie Chelack, 16, of Calgary, AB, and Bo Brown, 14, of Mississauga, ON, fared well in difficult conditions against some the best golfers south of the equator. Chelack shot rounds of 80, 90, 79, 84 (333), finishing alone in 42nd position, and Brown was 17 shots back of Chelack at 350 (90, 82, 90, 88).

The overall individual winners were Hayden Hopewell of Western Australia (68, 72, 73, 70=283) in the Boys Division, and Kathryn Norris, also of WA, in the Girls Division (71, 69, 71, 71=282).
