PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Jim Furyk played his best round at The Players Championship the one year he wasn’t even expecting to be here.
Among the last players in the field, Furyk played bogey-free on Friday for an 8-under 64, his lowest score in 80 rounds that span 25 years at the TPC Sawgrass.
It gave him a one-shot lead over Kevin Kisner and Jason Day among the early starters in the second round.
Tiger Woods also did something he hadn’t done in his 18 appearances in this event:
Woods hit two balls in the water on the island-green 17th, making a quadruple bogey that dropped him to a 71.
Furyk wasn’t eligible for The Players when the Ryder Cup ended. He played well enough since then to narrowly earn a spot.
