Blake and Nagy Tie for Low Overall in Windswept MJT at Moon Lake

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan — Facing winds gusting to as much as 40kmph, and a challenging golf course, young golfers delivered some surprisingly great scores over the Canada Day long weekend in the MJT’s Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit Series presented by PLYR Golf at Moon Lake Golf and Country Club in Saskatoon. Boys and girls were competing for titles in six divisions as well as for spots on MJT Team Canada to Australia for the JNJG International Junior Classic.

MJT veteran, Josh Nagy, earned his third consecutive 2019 MJT tournament victory in the MJT Junior Boys Division. The 17-year old from Saskatoon, SK, carded rounds of 73 and 78 (151) to win the Hoselton trophy by six shots over Estevan, SK-player, Chase Gedak (79, 78 - 157), 17. “The MJT tournament are a lot of fun to play in,” commented Nagy, who has been playing on the MJT since 2014. “It’s always a good time and I like playing with new people.”

Tying with Nagy for Low Overall Score and winning the MJT Juvenile title was 15-year old Will Blake, who shot scores of 79 and 72 (151). The Regina, SK-player was down by one shot after the first day and proceeded to start the second day with a two-under, bogey-free, front nine. “I got off to the start I wanted in the second round,” said Blake after accepting his Hoselton trophy. “I’m happy to win, especially coming from behind like that.” Finishing four shots behind Blake was 16-year old, TJ Baker, of Waskesiu, SK, who shot scores of 78 and 77 (155).

Saskatoon’s Alex Swinnerton, 14, fired scores of 78 and 76 to capture the MJT Bantam Boys Division by eight shots over fellow Saskatoon-player, Max Regier (81, 81 - 162), 13. Swinnerton made six birdies including two on the first three holes of his second round. “I got off to a pretty good start making those two birdies on the second day,” he commented, as he was trailing the leader by one shot after the first round. “It feels great to win again on the MJT and I look forward to the next tournament.” Swinnerton earns his third win in four starts this year on the MJT Junior Tour circuit in Saskatchewan.

Coming over from Strathmore, AB, was 12-year old, Parker Riou, who shot scores of 77 and 83 (160) to win the MJT Peewee Boys Division. Riou, who plays the majority of his MJT events on the Alberta circuit, came into Saskatchewan to claim his first win of 2019. “I feel very happy to win and make birdie on the last hole of the tournament,” he said, carding four birdies in total for the tournament. “The MJT runs great events and I always have lots of fun.” Coming second was Warman, SK’s Dane Giesbrecht, 11, who carded rounds of 84 and 85 (169).

Autumn Neiszner, of Regina, fired scores of 86 and 83 (169) to win the MJT Girls 15-18 and Low Overall Girls score for the tournament. Neiszner earned her second consecutive MJT Hoselton trophy, and third of the 2019 season. “I always have lots of fun playing in the MJT tournaments,” she said Neiszner. “I’ve been working hard on my game and it definitely got tested this week with the windy conditions.” Finishing second was Sarah Grieve, 16, of Saskatoon, who shot scores of 90 and 89 (179).

Yorkton, SK-resident, Ella Kozak, 13, carded rounds of 91 and 87 (178) in the MJT Girls U15 Division, stating, “The MJT tournament are always a lot of fun. The wind and other factors made for a challenging tournament.”
