BCer’s Chris Crisologo, Tristan Mandur Earn Spots in U.S. Amateur Championship

Richmond’s Chris Crisologo has played his way into next month’s United States Amateur Championship. Crisologo earned one of two available spots at a 36-hole qualifier Thursday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Palouse, Wash. Crisologo fired rounds of 72 and 67 to finish one-under par for the day. That was six shots behind medalist Joe Highsmith of Lakewood, Wash.
The 119th playing of the U.S. Amateur goes Aug. 11-18 at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. Crisologo, a member of Canada’s National Amateur Team and the 2018 B.C. Amateur champion, will be joined in the U.S. Amateur field by fellow British Columbian Tristan Mandur of North Cowichan.
Mandur earned his spot earlier in the week at a qualifier at Lake Spanaway Golf Course in Tacoma, Wash. Mandur, the 2016 B.C. Junior champion, shot rounds of 68 and 64 to finish at eight-under par. That was one stroke behind medalist Joe Fowler of Sacramento, Calif.
Also of note, Victoria, BC's Jeevan Sihota qualified as a first alternate for the U.S. Amateur at a site in Laramie, Wyo.
A total of 7,191 entries have been accepted for the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship, scheduled for Aug. 12-18, 2019, at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C. Sixty-seven players are fully exempt into the most prestigious championship in amateur golf, and the remaining places in the 312-player field will be filled from 36-hole sectional qualifiers being conducted by Allied Golf Associations at 93 sites between July 1 and July 24.
International qualifiers were scheduled for Mexico (July 9) and Canada (July 22), while Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, also conducted a qualifier July 18-19. Pinehurst’s Course No. 2 and Course No. 4 will host the stroke-play rounds on Aug. 12-13. After 36 holes, the field will be trimmed from 312 players to 64 for match play. The first five rounds of match play – through the semifinals – will be played on Course No. 2 on Aug. 14-17.
The 36-hole championship match will be contested over two courses for the first time. Scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 18, it will open with the morning round on Course No. 4, which was recently redesigned by Gil Hanse. The afternoon round will be played on Course No. 2, the renowned Donald Ross design that was restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2011.
