SILVIS, Illinois — A longtime volunteer at the John Deere Classic has died as the result of an accident at TPC Deere Run. Tournament officials announced that Charles “Chuck” Austin, 68, of Rock Island, Illinois, died of injuries apparently suffered in a tragic accident at the golf course while working to prepare the tournament site for next week’s event.
Tournament Director Clair Peterson said, “Chuck was a very special member of our volunteer force. On behalf of Chuck’s 1,750 fellow volunteers, title sponsor John Deere, the tournament staff, the players, and the PGA TOUR, I want to express our deepest sympathies to Chuck’s wife, Ann, and all of his loved ones.”
The Silvis Police Department is investigating the accident, Peterson said, and any details that can be made public about the incident will come from law enforcement authorities.
