It wasn’t the finish he wanted, but Jared du Toit still enjoyed what must be considered a successful pro debut this past weekend in Victoria.
Du Toit finished tied for 29th place at the Bayview Place Cardtronics Open at Uplands Golf Club. The 2015 B.C. Amateur champion from Kimberley had entered Sunday’s final round tied for eighth spot after opening with rounds of 67, 70 and 66. But a three-over 73 on Sunday dropped him down the leaderboard.
Du Toit had been Canada’s top-ranked amateur before turning pro after graduating recently from Arizona State University.
He will play his second pro event at this week’s GolfBC Championship at Gallagher’s Canyon in Kelowna, the third stop on the 2017 Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada schedule.
It was another Arizona State graduate who won in Victoria. Germany’s Max Rottluff, a former teammate of du Toit’s at Arizona State, finished at 16-under par and edged T.J. Vogel of Pembroke Pines, Fla., by one shot to collect his second Mackenzie Tour win.
Rottluff made his pro debut last year in Victoria and missed the cut at Uplands. Vancouver’s Ryan Williams shot a three-under 67 to finish tied for 12th spot. Williams finished second at last year’s Golf BC Championship.
TOP 10: Surrey’s Adam Svensson registered his second top 10 of the year, finishing tied for eighth at the Web.com Tour’s Rust-Oleum Championship in Ivanhoe, Ill. Svensson finished at five-under par, nine shots behind winner Stephan Jaeger of Germany. He earned $14,000 and moved to 45th from 60th on the Web.com money list.
B.C. DUO THIRD: Richmond’s Chris Crisologo and Steven Diack of Coquitlam finished third at the Mexican Amateur Championship that wrapped up Sunday.
The B.C. duo finished the three-round event at Campeche Country Club with a team score of 435. That was four shots behind the winning team from Mexico and one behind second-place Chile. Twenty-six teams competed in the tournament.
Crisologo tied for 19th spot in the individual competition at eight-over par. Diack tied for 26th at 11-over.
SERVICE PLANNED: A celebration of life for longtime PGA of BC pro Cec Ferguson will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 23 at University Golf Club in Vancouver. Ferguson, a life member of the PGA, passed away June 2 after a lengthy illness. He was 67.
Ferguson’s playing accomplishments included the 1986 PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada and three PGA of BC titles. He also worked as a general manager or head professional at several clubs in B.C. and Saskatchewan, including Quilchena in Richmond, Vernon Golf Club and Myrtle Point in Powell River. Ferguson was inducted into the B.C. Golf Hall of Fame in 2011.
PARRY PREVAILS: Bryn Parry just keeps winning. The Point Grey Golf & Country Club assistant won his fifth PGA of BC Assistants Championship last week at Salmon Arm Golf Club. Parry opened the 36-hole event with six-under 66 and followed that up with a one-over 73 to finish at five under par and one shot better than runner-ups Oliver Tubb of University Golf Club and Kevin Stinson of Cheam Mountain in Chilliwack. Parry earned $3,000 for the win.
The PGA of BC Seniors championship, held at the same time and venue, was won by Doug Morgan of Richmond Country Club. Morgan, a newly minted senior, finished with a two-day total of one-over par. That was good for a four-shot win.
Norm Jarvis of Nico Wynd Golf Course in Surrey, Murray Poje of Tsawwassen Springs and Roy Abbenbroek of Seymour Golf & Country Club in North Vancouver, tied for second place Morgan earned $1,500 and also gets a spot in the Tuesday qualifier for the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship, a PGA Champions event in Victoria in September.
OPEN SEASON: Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin will be teeing it up in his third U.S. Open this week at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. Hadwin, who is in the midst of a breakout season on the PGA TOUR, last played in the U.S. Open in 2013 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., where he missed the cut. He tied for 39th in his U.S. Open debut in 2011 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
Hadwin earned his first PGA TOUR win earlier this year at the Valspar Championship in Florida. He currently sits ninth in the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup standings.
