Vancouver, B.C. (May 1, 2017) – The sun came out over the weekend for the first in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Ford Series of events for 2017, at Chilliwack Golf Club in Chilliwack, BC, April 29 and 30, where junior golfers were vying for titles in seven divisions as well as direct spots into the US Kids World Championship for 11 and 12 year olds.

Girls U15: Emma Yang 14, of Langley, BC, shot 78,74=152 for an eight shot win over Angela Arora and Lauren Kim, both of Surrey, BC. Yang said the key to her win was, ‘putting and short game, and making some birdie putts, and it feels really great to win my first tournament of the year.’
MJT Girls 15-18: The title went to Alisha Lau, 17, of Richmond, BC, who was consistent all weekend, firing 73,74=147 for a three shot win over Cecile Kwon, 17, of Maple Ridge, BC. Lau stated, “It was my mental game that helped the most. I struggled with my game today, but I was able to keep my game together and grind it out. I just kept being patient for opportunities to score during the round.”
MJT Peewee Boys: Justin Bjornson, 11, of Surrey, BC, took the lead after day one by five strokes, and was able to bring it home with rounds of 73,76=149, an eight-stroke margin over second place Cooper Humphreys of Kelowna, BC. Bjornson credited his putts from 10 feet and in, saying that they were the best part of his game this weekend.
Bantam Boys 13-14: Bailey Bjornson, 13, of Surrey, BC completed the “Bjornson Double,” posting rounds of 74,71 = 145 to narrowly edge Andy Luo, 14, of Burnaby, BC. Bjornson said his putting and chipping were on point. “I feel good as I played well and was well prepared for the event.”
MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16: John Morrow, 16, of Delta, BC, claimed this first Juvenile Boys Crown with rounds of 76,71= 147. The second round of 71 propelled him to a four-shot victory over Aidan Goodfellow, 16, of Parksville, BC. “It felt great to win, the competition was really good, and to pull out my first win feels good.”
MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Andy Kim, 17, of Langley, BC, took home major honors this past weekend, as he claimed both his division’s Golf Town Performance Award for best second day improvement along with the Junior Boys title after shooting rounds of 76, 71=147, allowing him to narrowly take first place by one stroke over both Mitchell Thiessen, 18, of Chilliwack, and Willis Lee, 18, of Langley. “My shots kept me in play, which helped me – it is always fun winning,” said Kim.
Collegiate Men 19-23: The wind came up later on day two, and the Collegiate division faced the most demanding conditions of the weekend. Seowon Chang 19, of Abbotsford, BC, shot 151 over two days to win his division, as his 71 on day one allowed him to breathe a little easier on day two. Sikander Kaleka, 19, of Spruce Grove, AB, came in second place.
