Jack Nicklaus Shares The Secret Arnold Palmer Taught Him For Tight Lies

How do you use your putter? It’s a question worth asking, considering the number of strokes the average golfer takes around the green. Do you putt only when you have to? Or are you the type who’d take a whack with your mallet from the middle of the fairway, if you could? In Flashback Jack, Nicklaus argues in favor of expanding your putter’s role on the course and feeling unafraid to putt from areas away from the surface of the green.

“I used to chip the ball all the time from around the green,” Nicklaus said. “My first year on the Tour, I’ll never forget, I was playing with Arnold Palmer and he says, ‘why are you chipping that ball?’ and I said, ‘well, I just feel like it’s the right shot to play.'”

Just because chipping is the most aesthetically pleasing shot doesn’t make it the right play for your score, as Arnie pointed out.
