The European Tour has indicated it will get tougher on golfers who spit on the course, as it works with medical advisers over the introduction of stricter hygiene rules before it resumes after the pandemic lockdown.
The Tour has previously fined pros for spitting, most notably Tiger Woods in 2011 at the Dubai Desert Classic. Woods accepted his punishment and duly apologised.
The Tour's policy is never to disclose the amount of fines but when contacted by Telegraph Sport, it revealed that Woods has not been alone in being sanctioned over the years. Future miscreants can clearly expect more costly retribution.
“As part of our code of behaviour set out in our member regulations, players are expected to comply with normally accepted standards of courtesy and behaviours,” a spokesperson said. “We are currently working behind the scenes with our medical advisers on appropriate changes and best hygiene practices that will need to be implemented once it is safe and permitted for us return to action.”
